LANGUAGE PROGRAM
CENTER
FOR TOTAL COMMUNICATION
The Outreach Division through the Center for Total
Communication offers both On-Campus Classes and Off-Campus Classes
during the school year.
On-Campus Classes
Total Communication classes, using PSE (Pigdin Sign English), are
offered at the Longmeadow Campus during the fall and spring. These
classes are open to the public. Registration is held at the main campus
or through the mail. Detailed information is available upon
request.
Off-Campus Classes
Corporations, agencies and schools can arrange to have Total
Communication classes provided at their location by a sign language
instructor from the faculty.
Professional
Development Points (PDPs): Willie Ross School for the Deaf can offer
Professional Development Points to participants who have successfully
completed training sessions.

Registration is
closed after the second week of classes. Participants must be 16 years
of age or older. We do not offer child care.

Textbook: Signing, How to Speak with
Your Hands, by Elaine Costello, revised edition $19.00. Available to
purchase at registration, or anytime in the Cooley Administration
Building, Monday-Friday 8:30 p.m.- 4:30 p.m.
Course Descriptions
Beginner, Advanced Beginner and Intermediate levels will be presented
using total communication, which is a simultaneous voice and sign
message.
Beginners' Class
For students who have no previous experience in sign language or
fingerspelling. Students will learn to combine words to form simple
sentences.
Advanced Beginners' Class
For students who have some knowledge of sign language and who have
learned how to fingerspell. Students will increase vocabulary, develop
some fluency, speed and accuracy in the use of the manual alphabet,
develop the ability to use everyday expressions and conduct brief
conversations.
Intermediate Class
For students who possess a strong basic sign language vocabulary and
fluency in expressive communication. Emphasis will be on development
development of vocabulary and conversation.
Advanced Conversation
The emphasis of the class is on conversational skills. Review and
utilization of vocabulary presented in Beginner-Intermediate classes
will take place in the context of conversation. Non-manual behaviors
(such as eye gaze, facial expressions, body position), idioms and
expressions from American Sign Language will be incorporated into
conceptually correct English word order.
